CHAPTER 16
ROAD WEARY
Ser Gérard de Barres had no intention of allowing the caravan to dawdle along the road as they headed towards Legnica. He pushed the soldiers and horses hard, stopping only to refresh with food and water when absolutely necessary. Several times, the horses pulling the carriages were swapped out for some of the fresher mounts. The caravan continued well into the nights and resumed their journey well before sunrise after only a few hours of sleep.
Savina had expressed her desire to reach Legnica as quickly as possible. She had sent carrier pigeons several days earlier (while back in Zakop) to make arrangements. Gérard had not received any details of what those arrangements might entail, but he knew enough that it would be best to remain in her favor. The High Priestess seemed to be renewed with intense energy at the prospect of bringing justice down upon the heretics.

As soon as the sun dropped below the horizon, the vampires sped with all the haste they could muster. The tracks of their quarry were evident in the snow and mud of the road, but they could not seem to catch up to them. They did not see even a glimpse of a campfire in the distance.
âThey canât be much farther ahead of us,â remarked Atrael.
âWeâll overtake them by the end of the night,â declared Roland. âIf not, then the following night surely.â
The vampires sped on until they sensed that terrible ball of fire beginning to lurch up in the east; like a terrible titan preparing to bring its heel down upon them.
Roland peered ahead. âI think I might see them,â he stated.
Atrael followed his gaze to the west. It was hard to make out at the distance, but it looked like there might be some movement along the road, tiny specs making their way on the horizon.
The vampires did not have time to ponder on the vision any longer as they had to find shelter from the coming rays of sunlight.

Gérard rode back along the line of the caravan. He stopped near the wagon carrying the prisoners. Riding his horse near, he swung a mailed fist into the side of Faustaâs face. The sorceress cried out and fell to the floor of the wagon.
âYou havenât cast any curses on us, have you witch?â he said.
âSheâs not a witch!â spat Talitha.
âComing to the defense of a heathen, are you?â queried Gérard. âYou arenât doing yourself any favors.â
Camila moved over to tend to Fausta. Gérardâs arm snapped forward once again, his fist hitting Camila squarely in the face. Camila fell backward, her hands going to her nose which now gushed blood.
âDo not bring aid and comfort to a heathen!â Gérard commanded. âThe Heavenly Father sees all.â He turned his horse and continued riding along the caravan. âWe reach Legnica by sundown!â he shouted loudly. âThose who straggle, we leave behind!â
âIf I get a chance, Iâm going to kill him,â said Camila. She pressed fingers to her nose and focused the healing rays of holy light through it.
